The Department of Urban Planning and Disaster Management was established in 2003, and the master’s program and the executive master's program were founded in 2011 and 2015, respectively. Aimed at fostering professional students who are able to deal with complicated and interdisciplinary issues on urban planning for disaster mitigation, the department provides education integrating both theory and practices in spatial planning and disaster management. In order to enable students to foster the advanced skills for meeting market demands, the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) and the use of digitalized urban data are designed as core courses in our programs. High-level young talents in 3D design and disaster management are cultivated through the combination of core curriculum in local planning and disaster management, and practical training of field experience.
The department currently has 9 full-time faculty members, who all hold doctoral degrees from prestigious universities around the world, and 18 part-time faculty members, who have rich experiences in government entities and consulting. The research outcomes and professional abilities of our faculty members are widely recognized by academia, government, and firms in the industry. Many faculty members are regularly appointed by both local and central government as committee members for reviewing various kinds of environmental and planning programs. The department provides an undergraduate program for annual intakes of 58 students in the undergraduate program, 10 in the master's program, and 12 students in the executive master's program. Every semester, studio is conducted in the form that students are grouped and supervised to complete and deliver practical projects. Intensive discussion between teachers and students and among students is the major characteristics of the studio, wherein students are encouraged to learn by doing. The department also provides professional spaces, such as a workshop for graduation design, computer laboratory for disaster simulation, and professional classrooms for planning and design.
